It has been over 40years since Jimi Hendrix left us. He has left an indelible mark on rock and roll history, and to this day is still loved by so many music lovers. Despite the many decades since his passing, it is still common to see a Jimi Hendrix poster on the wall of a teenager’s bedroom.
Some History
James Hendrix or Jimi Hendrix was born in 1942 in Seattle, Washington. Jimi was named after his uncle who had died before he was born. Jimi was the oldest of 5 children and his parents struggled to provide for their large family. Jimi's father Al had been in the military when he was born and was discharged shortly after his birth. However, he had trouble finding civilian work after his stint in the military.
His family life was quite troubled and proved to be unstable for him as a support system. From time to time Jimi was sent to live with relatives until things calmed down between his parents. Two of Jimi's younger sisters were disabled and three of his siblings were placed in foster care. Jimi's parents divorced when he was only 9.
Jimi's mother died when he was 15 due to health problems that resulted from her alcohol abuse. Shortly after she died, he bought a guitar from a friend of his dad’s. Jimi started playing his guitar several hours a day from the start and became very good at guitar tricks like playing with his teeth and playing the guitar behind his back. This sparked the beginning of the virtuoso’s ascent to a guitar god.
Jimi also joined the Army for a short period of time. He was released from military duty for medical reasons after he injured his ankle. Wanting to focus on his musical talents, Jimi decided to become a professional musician.
Eventually, Jimi was hired by a group as a guitarist and appeared on a television show in the Nashville area. He eventually quit the band and signed on as a guitarist for Tina Turner. Jimi worked with many other famous musicians after this before going out on his own. He did try out for a gig with Mick Jagger, but Jagger was unimpressed with Hendrix.
Eventually, his fame spread across the United States and Europe. Jimi was famous for his guitar playing skills as well as his fashion sense. He was known to wear outrageous vintage clothing; large pieces of jewelry, silk scarves, and feather boas. He also liked hats and shirts with long, flowing sleeves.
Sadly, like many musicians in the 1960's, Jimi Hendrix developed a taste for illegal drugs. He used drugs regularly and was arrested in Canada for possession. He also drank to excess from time to time. Jimi died in London in 1970 after he attended a party with friends. According to his girlfriend at the time, he overdosed on prescription drugs. At one point in time, a close friend of Jimi's claimed that Jimi's manager had him killed because Jimi did not want to finish out his recording contract. Others alleged that Hendrix had in fact committed suicide by intentionally ingesting too many drugs. To this day, the truth about Jimi Hendrix’s death remains elusive.
Jimi Hendrix was laid to rest in a small town outside of Seattle, Washington. His father and grandmother are buried with him.
Although Jimi died in 1970 at the young age of 28, he made a great impression upon the world of music and people in general. Even though his life was cut short, Jimi's music endures to this today. Jimi has inspired countless musicians over the past four decades to follow their dreams and to reach for the sky.
